carrots, walla-walla sweet onions, and yes, even a little sweet corn (!) will all be on the farmstand tomorrow, Saturday, 10-3. We’ll also have red cabbage, kale, fresh garlic, even a few beets, and maybe some broccoli. And delicious olive oil! Corn will sell out quick, it’s just starting to ripen, so come early!
Plants have been started for this year’s Winter greenhouse – kale, collards, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, arugula… (and we may have a few extra plants so I’ll be sure and post if we do). Carrots and beets will be direct-seeded.

I’ll be teaching at NOFA – Making Herbal Oils, Lip Balms and Salves
It’s a really fun class. Each person will make their own herb oil, then pour a lip balm and flavor it, then watch the magic of making hand cream and scent their own to take home! You will learn the skills to do this at home. It’s really not that hard. My class is 1-2:30, but there’s lots of other great classes, see the NOFA link above to get the schedule!

Hi there, we’ve got kale, cabbage, fresh garlic, swiss chard, parsley, olive oil today.
We’ll be self-serve off and on again today as I’ve got 16 (?) awesome family-folk visiting and we’ll be eating lunch together and making shoes! Today 6 of us will be making these sandals. How lucky is that that I have people in my own family that want to make fun (and functional) things together?
This week I also learned how to make Colombian Empanadas, deep fried corn deliciousness usually filled with meat, peas, potatoes and spices ( I can’t eat potatoes so I used chickpeas, peas and the same spices).
I felt like a real Colombian : ) Everyone worked together with Carlos Vives music in the background, it was really fun.
The corn grits were soaked for 2 days prior, then everything was mixed together to be spooned onto the rolled out corn-dough.
Today we’ll deep-fry them in organic sunflower oil and eat them with fresh-squeezed lime juice for our big lunch with other visiting Colombians. I believe rice and beans, Colombian-style will be on the menu as well. Did I mention my mother’s side is Colombian? It’s been a great visit, a little spanish, shoemaking, talking and lots of eating. I feel lucky to have such wonderful family. And such good cooks…

There’s not a lot ready in our garden right now – tomatoes are not quite ready, peas didn’t like the heat and are done, green beans are coming in slowly…. but we have bunches of kale $3 and bags of cooking mix $5 (kale,chard, parsley) and heads of savoy cabbage $3, and Olea Estates organic olive oil $36, so we’ll be here with those. Also bodycare and notecards. It will be off and on self-serve, depending where I am : )

We’re OPEN today, 10-3, with 2 kinds of kale and a cooking greens mix (including chard, kale, broccolini, parsley…), sugar snap peas, first cabbages, organic Olea Estates olive oil (yum, the real deal), herbal bodycare products like lip balms, salves, lavender and x-ema creams and Salve-Making and Lip Balm kits. If it’s not too wet out I’ll put out my notecards, showing paintings of trees and flowers I painted in my past-life (before farming and Keith) as an artist. They are $2 each or 3 for $5
Also to note, Shutesbury Farmers Market is going on until noon.
And, Wheatberry Bakery in Amherst (mostly organic and local and I think the first GMO-free restaurant in the country possibly) has copies to lend of Genetic Roulette, an amazing documentary about genetically modified foods and how they affect us. Stop by the bakery and borrow a copy!
Corn, soy, sugar beets (any product that says “sugar” not organic, not evaporated cane juice, just “sugar” is made from GMO sugar beets), alfalfa, canola oil, papaya, cotton (not for eating but cottonseed oil?), now salmon, rice (they’re working on it) and wheat (accidentally spread, was thought to be destroyed when the GMO project was ended). Vegetable oil, french fries, salad dressings, candy, corn tortilla chips… all things to watch out for and DEFINITELY buy organic. It may seem like more money now, but WAY LESS if you factor in future medical bills and value of health and vibrancy. It’s something we should all look at and be aware of. We do feed ourselves every day, at least a few times!
Our theory is to buy direct from the growers as much as we can: our meat, milk, cheese, veggies and fruits (freezers are great, apples keep in a fridge) and grains (so many local grains grown around the Pioneer Valley) so that we know what is in our food. We buy less packaged and prepared food, which saves a LOT of money, to leave more for spending at the Farmers Market. With the internet now and a little planning you can look up almost any recipe you want to make and most ingredients you can buy locally at Farmer’s Markets or a few from us! I just learned that you can buy local organic “pork belly” and make bacon, in a pretty short time (of course I forget now because I didn’t do it right away, but I’ll ask again) maybe 3 days of salt & maple curing?) for half the price of buying organic bacon. Who knew?

Hi all, open tomorrow (Sat) 10-3 with sugarsnap and snow peas, kale, garlic scapes, braising mix and olive oil. Maybe a little broccoli early on. Have I mentioned recently we are all organic (uncertified but VERY organic)? I figured it’s worth mentioning again! We’re right down the hill from the Shutesbury Farmers Market, which runs 8:30-noon I think.
SOMETIMES SELF SERVE: Saturday I should be around MOST of the day BUT if I’m not right out front and you don’t see me around I’ll be leaving the stand self-serve, counting on the honor system. This way I can get a little work done and you can still get your veggies! I’ll leave a price list, feel free to take what you need and leave what is fair. It’s tricky since we are cash only, but there should be some change in there and we really appreciate your honesty. It will be right outside the house, in the usual spot next to the driveway, under the beech tree. If this works I’ll be able to be open a bit more, like maybe on Sundays, Mondays… we’ll see!
If you pre-ordered olive oil (more than a few tins) I’ll have those out, labelled with your name if I’m not around. Thanks.
